Our Work

OUR WORK

We are called to holistically reach out to under-privileged communities; to care, provide opportunities and empower young people to lead and develop their communities.

Shalom Light School

Shalom Light School is a Christian school purposed to raise well trained and educated young leaders with a compassionate and servant-hood spirit. The school “provides education, basic skills and emphasizes good behavior to enable learners live a decent and productive life in their Community”.

Core Values

 Discipline
 Moral Uprightness
 God fearing
 Integrity
 Presentable

There is an overwhelming number of children not attending school, drop-outs or have left school because their parents or guardians cannot afford to sustain them in school due to poverty. For this reason, SLS was established to bridge this gap to provide a “holistic” education to the underprivileged children in the pre-primary and primary education through full or partial sponsorship. Currently, the school’s enrollment stands at 237 children compared to 30 children when we started in September, 2014.

Income generating activities

As emphasized by Action against Hunger; Income generating activities are a key concept to sustainability especially food security. Most of our sponsored children are chosen from poor families (using poverty indicators to select beneficiary families) staying with foster/single parents, care takers and extended family members.

To ensure our children are supported and cared for in their homes, we initiated improving family incomes through small family businesses like; tailoring, retail shops, poultry, pig rearing and craft making. We also support and promote environmentally friendly projects of comparative advantage such as organic poultry and piggery farming using donations and grants received inform of seed capital and interest-free revolving funds.

WASH

Namuyenje community suffers from scarcity of safe and clean water. Children walk long distances to collect water which hinders them from attending school or, are late for school. Most communities depend on seasonal rains for water and unfortunately many families lack means of storage for later use. These spring wells are open and shared with animals which increases the spread of water borne diseases in the area due to consumption of contaminated water.

Shalom Restoration Ministries through sensitizes the communities about good sanitation and hygiene through WASH workshops and community meetings and also provides durable affordable water reservoirs to the neediest families.

Sustainability

Sustainability initiatives are a critical part of our development, growth and expansion strategy. Under this strategy includes; piggery, farming, livestock, recycling and using modern technology at our premises.

The purpose of our sustainability program is mainly;

To conserve the environment by recycling waste and converting it to gas for cooking, manure and fertilizers to minimize costs and improve crop production.
To generate income that sustains SRM activities, allowing us to provide for the children and their families.
To create employment opportunities for community members working directly and indirectly with SRM
